Burma Task Force USA is asking us to recognize the ruinous impact of legal restrictions in Burma that severely limit the rights of Rohingya Muslims and other ethnic minorities. Over the last generation hundreds of thousands—Minority Rights Group International states over a million—have fled the country. Moreover, in the last two years orchestrated mob attacks have been driving Muslims from villages and neighborhoods; the property is then seized. Aung San Suu Kyi and her party have been noticeably quiet about the ethnic cleansing campaigns.
Political and economic reforms will be meaningless if they result in strengthening a Jim Crow style society that limits the right to work and to raise a family. Today news reports from Burma tell that the extremist Buddhist leader U Wirathu is still actively promoting a law that would restrict intermarriage with Muslims. This is yet another reason why Congress must pass Resolution 418 calling on the government of Myanmar/Burma to end the persecution of the Rohingya people and respect the human rights for all ethnic and religious minority groups. Despite being introduced almost two months ago there are still only 16 co-sponsors. Why? See: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/113/hres418
